The Chief Executive of Google has casually revealed the Nexus S handset while giving further details about version 2.3 of the Android operating system, during the Web 2.0 conference in California.
Eric Schmidt essentially put paid to rumours that a follow up to the Nexus One, which launched at the start of 2010, was in the works, although he did not openly showcase this handset.
Mr Schmidt used a handset which he neglected to name in order to demonstrate that Android 2.3 was up and running.
Android 2.3 will take the name Gingerbread, just as FroYo, Cupcake and Donut before it have related to various versions of Google's platform. Originally it had been thought that Android Gingerbread would be version 3.0, but now that 2.3 is nearing release, it looks like it will be another incremental update rather than a complete overhaul.
The Google Nexus S is believed to be manufactured by Samsung, sporting an AMOLED display and near field communication (NFC) technology, which will allow it to operate like a virtual wallet which can make payments and eliminate the need for separate bank cards.
Mr Schmidt explained that the release of Android 2.3 is set to be within the next few weeks and the updated platform will add NFC as one of its killer functionalities. A few aesthetic tweaks have also been implemented, with the screen lock not just turning the display black instantly, but running through a small animation that makes it look like you are turning off an old CRT television set.
Only a few details about the physical properties of the Nexus S could be gleaned, but according to Engadget it is perhaps slimmer than the iPhone 4, with a slightly concave design that is thicker at the ends than the middle.
