Glasgow Commonwealth Games heralded as recycling success

Earlier this year the Commonwealth Games came to Glasgow, with a wide variety of sporting activities and global stars descending on the city, along with huge crowds keen to see the action.
Large events of this kind can be a nightmare to manage, especially when it comes to the topic of sustainability. But organisers in Glasgow have subsequently revealed that the games in Glasgow were actually very green, thanks to a concerted effort made to recycle as much waste as possible for the duration.
It had been hoped that 80 per cent of waste would be kept out of landfill sites over the course of July and August, but after calculating levels after the Games, it was revealed that organisers had outdone themselves and achieved an 86 per cent rate.
Forty nine per cent of this rubbish was recycled, with everything from plastic bottles to food waste disposed of in a responsible way. This was achieved by separating rubbish into recyclable materials at the venues hosting the games themselves, rather than requiring that this be done at a later date.
Games spokesperson, David Grevemberg, said that he was grateful for both the help of volunteers as well as the conscientious manner with which the spectators were willing to work with the recycling initiative.
Mr Grevemberg went on to say that the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow would become the blueprint for other major events hosted in Scotland, since they had proved that such large scale meetings can take place without having to make compromises on sustainability, according to The Courier.
It is good to see cities and event organisers taking responsibility for the need to avoid waste during public gatherings of this kind, as well as appreciating that people are more than willing to do their bit when they visit an event.
