Giffgaff launches mobile recycling & resale service

As mobile phone recycling grows in popularity it is no surprise to see network providers jumping on the bandwagon and opening up a bevy of sustainable opportunities to their customers.
Giffgaff is the latest firm to get onboard with this idea, as this week it unveiled its official mobile marketplace, operated in conjunction with recycling firm, Redeem, according to Mobile Today.
Customers will be able to send in their old mobile phones to receive a quick valuation. If they are happy with the price that is offered, they will get paid the same day, although they can request for their handset to be returned to them if the quote does not meet expectations.
Meanwhile, anyone who wants to buy a used, thoroughly evaluated smartphone will have the ability to do so using the same portal, saving time and money.
Giffgaff spokesperson, Kim Faura, pointed out that each year the reselling of smartphones in the UK alone helps to generate £1.2 billion, with the rise of recycling culture helping to catalyse growth in this industry. So it makes sense for this network and others to offer competitive services, which in turn will improve the prospects for consumers looking to sell their old phones and get a good price in return.
This market is likely to grow even further over the coming years, since new device sales are slowing down and more people are willing to buy second hand devices, since there are not as many reasons to upgrade as hardware reaches a plateau.
Giffgaff is a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO), which means it does not own any infrastructure itself, but instead piggybacks on the coverage offered by O2. Now its SIM only offers may be more appealing to a wider audience thanks to the launching of this handset resale platform.
