Facebook focused mobiles inbound from Vodafone

UK network provider Vodafone has restated its commitment to bringing Facebook to mobile users in new and interesting ways, by announcing a planned range of handsets which centre on giving access to the world's largest social network.
Vodafone has already started its Facebook-focused initiative by revealing a model called the 555 Blue. What is significant about this mobile phone is that it is not technically a smartphone and, as such, will be very affordable, but it will still give you access to all the Facebook features you would expect on a much more expensive device.
The 555 Blue has a small display and a full QWERTY keypad, but it is the core integration of Facebook in to the hardware and software that makes it stand out. Vodafone is planning to add to the Blue range, with spokesperson, Patrick Chomet, saying that touchscreen editions will eventually emerge.
It seems that the 555 Blue is really something of an experiment and the first step on the road to improvement. It lacks 3G connectivity and its camera is basic, but Mr Chomet hinted that all this will be rectified in later, presumably more costly versions.
Of course you might assume that a Facebook phone is largely redundant since even the most basic smartphones have a Facebook app or at least access to the Facebook site. But like the HTC ChaCha, the Vodafone 555 Blue and its future siblings will all compose themselves entirely around Mark Zuckerberg's popular site.
Vodafone is looking to sell its Facebook phones at around the £70 mark, but this is dangerously close to the bottom end of what you can expect to pay for a smartphone based on Android, so it will be interesting to see whether consumers are willing to sell their old phones in exchange for an experience which is entirely involved with Facebook.
