Ethics-driven smartphone launched in the UK

A new mobile phone which is ethically designed and built has been made available to buyers in the UK via the Phone Co-op, according to an official announcement.
The Fairphone FP1U is cited as being the world’s first and only handset to have been created specifically to put social values at the top of the agenda, meaning it is not only produced from sustainable materials without hazardous components, by workers who are fairly treated, but that it is also easier to recycle than its rivals.
The issues addressed by the FP1U start right at the basics, since it does not use any metals sourced from conflict zones and thus does not indirectly fund any corrupt regimes in the third world.
While the device is put together in China, money generated by the sales of the device goes back into a fund, which ensures workers have access to welfare services and cash, to help improve the communities in which they live.
The Fairphone’s design is one which focuses on ease of repair, enabling damaged components to be replaced inexpensively, while also meaning that devices can be recycled wholly and safely at the end of their life cycle.
The manufacturer is even providing users with tutorials, so that they can carry out any repair work themselves if necessary.
The handset is available with two SIM slots as standard and the company behind it is involved in a number of good causes, which target e-waste disposal and other initiatives internationally. So people in the UK who are concerned about the origins of their own mobile might consider the Fairphone as a better option.
With a quad core CPU, eight megapixel primary camera and 4.3 inch display, the Fairphone is a suitably powerful Android-based smartphone to boot, making adoption easier to consider.
