Eco-friendly mobile market expected to undergo significant growth

A new report has outlined the expected trajectory that the market for sustainable smartphones and recycled devices will take over the next four years, with analysts anticipating a compound annual growth rate of almost 17 per cent between now and 2019 in this industry.
The report, issued by Big Market Research, points out that the mobile recycling sector is expected to grow as a result of consistent growth in the output of the mobile manufacturing industry, since demand for portable devices is still increasing internationally.
In the report, it is mentioned that the rise in e-waste generated by increased mobile sales is causing a similar uptick in awareness of the environmental impact of devices which are disposed of improperly.
Recycling is not only going to increase as a result of public awareness around the dangers of discarded mobiles, but also because manufacturers are having to face up to the fact that there may be shortages of the precious materials required to build modern handsets.
By recycling old phones, vital minerals can be reclaimed and then reused in the manufacture of brand new mobiles. So the companies behind the industry have a vested interest in ensuring that recycling rates are on the rise, according to the study.
Meanwhile mobile makers are likely to refocus their efforts on developing handsets that are more sustainable in the first place, making them easier to recycle further down the line, while also experimenting with modular phones which allow users to make upgrades themselves.
Mobile makers are likely to turn to the use of plastics for producing handsets going forward, with 42 per cent of the market likely to be based on this material by 2019. This is because it is not only cheaper, but also more resilient and durable than alternatives.
