Easy Yorkshire recycling trial a success

A new scheme initiated in areas of East Yorkshire to encourage increased rates of recycling amongst residents, has been hailed as a success, according to the York Press.
People living in the places covered by the initiative recycled 67 per cent of the unwanted items they produced as households during May, which as an average figure, is the most significant proportion ever recorded.
Previously, the blue recycling bins provided to all residents were collected monthly, which made it largely impractical to recycle every single eligible item, since the receptacles would quickly become full.
The trial scheme saw the regularity of the blue bin collection changing to once every two weeks, alternating with a fortnightly collection of green bins, which are filled with general waste destined for landfill.
With this one on, one off approach to recycling, the local authorities were able to easily encourage more people to dispose of their waste more conscientiously. This also suggests that people are more than willing to give recycling a go, provided they have the means to carry it out with ease.
Local council spokesperson, John Skidmore, said that the trial will be expanded to encompass more areas in the county, thanks to the clear success of its initial run.
He pointed out that local people were clearly enthusiastic about the idea of reducing the amount of rubbish which is sent straight to the tip.
The state of recycling in the UK is somewhat fragmented, with individual councils dictating what type of service is available to residents. This means that it is easier to behave in an eco conscious manner in some parts of the country than others.
However, the ongoing success of such recycling schemes should eventually lead to everyone in the UK being able to recycle at home.
