EU to experience increase in plastic recycling rates

The recycling of plastics is one of the most important concerns for environmental campaigners and European governments alike, since much waste consists of this material and sending it to landfill will result in hundreds of years during which little or no decomposition will take place.
This makes continued work to expand the abilities of EU member states to deal with used plastics appropriately and efficiently, all the more important.
A conference held on the subject of resource efficiency for plastics took place this month in Brussels, with various representatives of the European Plastics Recycling organisation (EuPR) attending, to discuss the progress that has been made and the plans for the future.
It was decided that the organisation will rebrand itself as Plastics Recyclers Europe and also launch a number of new promotional campaigns, to ensure that more people than ever get the message about the need to reuse or recycle as many plastic items as possible.
It was also argued that targets for plastic recycling need to be revised upwards, so that countries such as the UK have more ambitious goals in this area.
The organisation also plans to work at things from the other end of the spectrum, by ensuring that the plastic packaging and products which are produced meet stricter eco-friendly regulations, which should streamline the eventual recycling process.
When it comes to mobile phones, many manufacturers have been attempting to cut down on the amount of packaging that is included with new devices, making it easy for people to recycle them if necessary.
Meanwhile, the materials used to make modern phones can vary wildly, from basic plastics to high end polycarbons. This means that the best way to dispose of an unwanted old handset is to recycle it via a reputable company, rather than simply sending it to landfill.
