Dundee criticised for falling recycling rates

The city of Dundee has come under fire after the council revealed that it is home to one of the country's lowest recycling rates.
The Courier reports that last year just 31.8 per cent of waste was recycled, which is a dip of almost three percentage points when compared to the previous year.
This puts it in 26th place overall for recycling in Scotland, although a council spokesperson offered some explanation for the dip and pointed out that things are being done to rectify this state of affairs.
Part of the problem is that the reclassification of certain waste products meant that recycling figures were affected, with the council claiming that it appreciates the need to be more active in its combating of lax recycling culture in Dundee.
The implications of the Zero Waste Plan mean that places like Dundee will need to work harder if they are to keep up with recycling targets, which, in some instances, will require a shift in culture and not just a change to the way that waste is collected and defined.
The good news for Dundee residents is that the city is actually succeeding in other eco-oriented areas. For example, people have expressed near universal satisfaction with the levels of street cleaning and litter collection.
This is clearly a costly process, but the council is willing to make investments in areas like this, so that there is evidence of public money being put into causes that make a tangible difference to the city.
The roads of Dundee have also been given praise as a result of the impressive maintenance efforts which go into keeping them in top shape. This is relevant when it comes to ensuring that transport links run smoothly and carbon emissions caused by congestion are kept to a minimum.
