Dominance of mobile gaming to increase handset upgrades, recycling

The number of people playing games on their mobile phone has grown dramatically according to the latest figures, with experts claiming that the surge in smartphone usage will encourage more people to recycle their mobile phones early, in order to bag an upgrade.
Over the past 12 months the gaming market share held by mobile phones was estimated to be 55 per cent, according to a poll conducted by casual game developer, Popcap.
Two years ago a similar study concluded that mobile gaming accounted for just 17 per cent of the market, which shows just how significant the increase in smartphone ownership and app availability has been on making mobile gaming a powerhouse of the interactive entertainment industry.
Sony Ericsson's decision to launch a PlayStation-certified smartphone may seem less risky when you consider these statistics, but it is worth remembering that the best gaming handsets are also more expensive than phones which are only able to perform basic functions.
Industry insider, Simon Dunn, told Gadgets and Gizmos.org, that in order to cover the costs of getting a new smartphone, whether it be the price of the handset itself or the monthly contract payments, many consumers are choosing to recycle their old mobiles in order to drum up some funds.
Since most people have more than one ageing handset lying around at home, the money earned from mobile recycling can be relatively significant. Also those who upgrade their phone while their existing handset still has a decent resale value, will be recouping much more than others with entry level mobiles, thus further offsetting the cost of mobile gaming.
With many mobile games coming into the impulse buy price bracket, it is no surprise that the market has exploded in recent years and it shows no sign of slowing.
