Council criticised over plans to scrap recycling scheme

Derby City Council has come under fire from environmental campaigners, after it revealed that it is thinking about getting rid of recycling bins for residents living in almost 140 different streets.
The council claims that it is planning to take this action because the recycling bins cause a variety of problems, from fly tipping and littering, to missed collections.
However, the Derby Telegraph reports that environmentalists within the city are not happy with this news, arguing that it could be construed as the council taking an anti-recycling stance and, therefore, legitimising wasteful habits amongst residents of the city.
Derby Climate Coalition spokesperson, Peter Robinson, said that the repercussions of such action could be felt well outside the city, since the message sent by the council is one which definitely seems to be detrimental to recycling as a whole.
Mr Robinson argued that the council has a responsibility to help people cut down on their carbon emissions within Derby. By removing the recycling bins and limiting collections, this could lead to bigger problems further down the line.
Council spokesperson, Ranjit Banwait, said that the proposed scrapping of recycling bins in Derby was a bold move and one which was being taken because the local authority had so far failed to impart the message of responsible refuse to certain communities.
He said things like language barriers and a lack of adequate education could prove problematic when promoting recycling and many people do not understand what the bins are for, which means the wrong types of waste end up in the wrong place.
Of course, it could be argued that, as Mr Robinson said, the council has a responsibility to continue to push an eco-friendly agenda, that minimises carbon emissions and improves the state of the city at the same time.
