Consumers urged to recycle all unwanted electronics, not just phones

Mobile phone recycling has become a high profile industry in the past half-decade, with online operators and the availability of comparison making it easy for consumers to sell their old handsets and get cash in return, all while being environmentally responsible.
But a new study from the US, has shown that while mobile phones are getting plenty of press, they represent just a small slice of electronic waste as a whole, according to ClickGreen. This means that consumers need to be educated about the benefits associated with recycling all of their old electronics, not just mobiles.
Eighty nine per cent of E-waste is made up of non-mobile gadgets, from desktop PCs to old TVs, all of which can end up at landfill if consumers fail to take into account the fact that they, too, can be recycled.
The emergence of websites offering easy access to classified ads, as well as online communities dedicated to letting people part ways with old items for free, has helped alleviate some of the strain. But for items that can no longer be used, recycling is the best way to go.
Mobile phones contain precious metals and other minerals which can be harvested as part of the recycling process and the same is true of other gadgets. Behaving responsibly and recycling all E-waste will be a benefit for generations to come, so hopefully, more campaigning to raise awareness about the recycling facilities which are available in the UK and elsewhere will help.
Bear in mind that while you can sell your mobile phone online, it may be tougher to get any cash in return for other electronic items, so you will need to carry out the recycling out of a desire to be environmentally friendly, rather than for a financial reward.
