Companies to simplify recycling via clear, concise labelling

At the moment when you purchase a new product, whether it is a mobile phone, a home appliance or even a perishable grocery item, you will be given little to no information about how to best recycle the packaging in which it is delivered to you.
However, major corporations, including Microsoft, are going to start labelling their products as part of the How2Recycle initiative, which looks to reduce the confusion about how you should properly dispose of any unwanted containers and other materials that, invariably, pile up and end up in a landfill site.
How2Recycle is the brainchild of the Sustainable Packaging Coalition (SPC) and so far it has collectively signed up 10 major firms which are committed to applying this new labelling to their products.
The first items with such recycling advice onboard will begin to ship this summer, although the initiative will continue to pick up pace well into 2013, according to BusinessGreen.
SPC spokesperson, Anne Bedarf, said that consumers were looking for clearer communication from companies as to how they can make their purchasing habits more sustainable, which typically involves recycling as much as possible and disposing of all waste, in a manner that is sustainable.
Bedarf also said that consumers are more likely to respect and appreciate a company if it takes steps to make its operations greener, which means that there is additional motivation for firms to actually take eco-friendly steps.
The How2Recycle label will first make an appearance in the US, although the SPC looks like it has international ambitions and it could eventually see packaging in the UK and elsewhere featuring the same advice.
If you want to act sustainably, then you can always do some research about how to recycle the packaging which you receive, at least until all manufacturers make it clearer.
