Companies in Scotland embrace recycling culture

A new survey has found that a growing number of organisations based in Scotland are choosing to recycle waste items, rather than sending them to landfill, with every effort helping to contribute to a more sustainable way of doing business, according to the BBC.
The study was conducted by an initiative known as Every Can Counts, with 1,000 enterprises questioned to establish the extent to which recycling projects are being pursued.
Almost three quarters of those questioned said that they have rolled out regulations which ensure that recyclable waste materials are separated from those that cannot currently be recycled. And 91 per cent confirmed that they are going to boost their targets for recycling in the near future.
In 2013, a similar study found that just over two thirds of Scottish businesses had recycling targets in place, so there has clearly been a real rise in the percentage of organisations that are tuned into the need to behave more sustainably and responsibly.
Report spokesperson, Andrew McFarlan, said that while the figures were positive, there was still a need for further campaigning, to ensure that recycling is not just a flash in the pan for businesses, but a culture which can be fostered so that proper disposal of recyclable waste is carried out on a permanent basis.
As well as campaigning to raise awareness about recycling, there are a number of new regulatory changes that are coming into force, which will provide additional incentives for firms to separate out plastic, paper and glass from other materials for recycling.
And, of course, companies can do a lot to reduce the build up of electronic waste by recycling old mobile phones, computers, TVs and other devices, so that the environmental impact of upgrades is not as significant.
