Chinese manufacturers planning big screen phone invasion

At the moment if you want a big screen smartphone, then there are a relatively small number of options available to you, in part because the goalposts are always being moved to make larger and larger displays the current trend.
Samsung's Galaxy S3 has a 4.8 inch display, which sounds impressive, but is exceeded by the 5.5 inch screen of the Galaxy Note 2.
However, Chinese manufacturer Huawei has decided to outdo its South Korean rival with the officially announced Ascend Mate, which was shown off in-store by an executive this week.
It packs a massive 6.1 inch display which also comes equipped with a full HD 1080p resolution, putting the 720p screens of the Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2 into the last generation of screen technology.
A quad core processor with a 1.8GHz clock speed, coupled with 2GB of RAM, helps to give the Ascend Mate all the right features that will have its rivals trembling in their boots.
It was originally thought that Huawei would be launching the Ascend Mate during CES 2013 in January, but it got the phone out there early, to generate plenty of media attention.
Meanwhile ZTE, which is another mobile manufacturer based in China, has also had its own big screen smartphone unveiled this week, albeit in the form of a leaked press shot acquired by Engadget.
The ZTE Grand S will be the firm's flagship phone next year and features a five inch display, which also has a 1080p resolution.
While it is smaller than both the Ascend Mate and Galaxy Note 2, its screen size will make it a direct competitor for Samsung's Galaxy S4, which is thought to be getting its own announcement at CES, with current rumours also pointing to a five inch 1080p display for this device.
