BlackBerry is reborn

This week saw the official announcement of the BlackBerry 10 mobile operating system, along with the first showing of the two handsets that will support it.
In addition, Canadian manufacturer, RIM, that has been behind the BlackBerry brand since its inception, has actually decided to rename its entire operation after the operating system and smartphone range for which it is best known.
The BlackBerry Z10 handset which is the firm's flagship BB10 device went on sale in the UK the day after the launch, showing that it is aware of the pressing need to start reclaiming some of its lost market share.
In terms of hardware, the Z10 is definitely competitive, since it has a 4.2 inch 720p HD display, a dual core 1.5GHz processor and 16GB of onboard storage space.
The Z10 is a touchscreen-only device, which means that unlike the simultaneously launched Q10 and many BlackBerry handsets that have come before, it does not have a physical QWERTY keypad.
The Q10 is there to replace the old BlackBerry Bold range and does have the same array of buttons as its predecessor, albeit without the optical trackpad.
The Q10 is just as powerful as the Z10, but at 3.1 inches across the diagonal, its screen is significantly smaller.
Of course, a smartphone is only as good as the operating system that it uses and, at the moment, it seems that the jury is still out on BB 10.
Part of the problem is that you cannot really tell how a brand new operating system will perform in the long term, because it needs the support of third party app developers, if it is going to compete with Android, iOS and Windows Phone.
A gesture-based interface and the promise of 70,000 apps from day one, has helped to allay fears about BB 10, so now consumers just need to get out and actually buy a new BlackBerry.
