BlackBerry Colt could be RIM's saviour

BlackBerry manufacturer RIM is likely to reveal the Colt handset at the start of next year and rumours suggest that it will be the first smartphone to run the QNX operating system developed in part by NASA.
QNX has already been made available on the BlackBerry Playbook tablet device and has received plenty of critical acclaim for its multitasking capabilities, smooth interface and Flash content compatibility.
Meanwhile experts are sceptical about the viability of the current BlackBerry OS because it seems to be lagging behind rivals like Android when it comes to functionality.
According to sources quoted by BGR there will be a BlackBerry Colt smartphone inbound at the start of 2012, although it could only have a single core processor and not a dual or quad core chip as many had hoped.
The Playbook tablet runs a dual core 1GHz CPU so it would have been unsurprising to see the next BlackBerry mobile sporting the same kind of hardware, although at the moment this seems a little less than certain.
Observers are hoping that RIM will make QNX compatible with its current mail service because at the moment the Playbook requires access to a separate BlackBerry smartphone in order to share messages and cannot perform this function on its own. As such this software might seriously limit any smartphone bearing the BlackBerry name unless it is remedied.
UK consumers will be able to get their hands on the BlackBerry Colt in the first three months of 2012 and in the interim around five other brand new RIM handsets will be hitting stores to help you pick up a phone right now.
QNX is definitely the operating system that RIM needs to modernise its smartphones, but unless it irons out the kinks it will be a little less than satisfactory.
