BlackBerry Bold 9780 added to RIM ranks

Following on from the BlackBerry Torch is another smartphone announced this week by manufacturer RIM, this time taking a much more traditional slant on the famous business-focused range.
The phone in question is the BlackBerry Bold 9780 and while at first glance it will not seem to be much more than a slightly shiner edition of the Bold 9700, under the skin there are some significant changes that are worth absorbing.
The Bold 9780 has the same full portrait QWERTY keypad perched below a modest display and optical trackpad as other recent BlackBerry devices, but RIM is getting excited about this release because it will bring version 6.0 of its BlackBerry OS platform to only the second handset in the world, with the recently launched Torch being the first.
BlackBerry OS 6 has plenty of new features that can help the Bold 9780 stand tall next to the good and the great of the smartphone market. The web browser is brand new and RIM's Carlo Chiarello pointed to other features such as universal searching capabilities and enhanced social networking functions, in order to emphasise this mobile's continued relevance in the modern world.
The hardware of the Bold 9870 is also a little more contemporary, with a five megapixel camera supported by an LED flash finding a home on the rear and keeping the basic photographic capabilities in line with most of its major rivals. It is also compatible with microSD memory cards up to 32GB in size, although a 2GB card is a planned inclusion with the retail version.
RIM believes that the BlackBerry Bold 9780 will be available in the UK at some point early in November, so any long time users who are looking to replace their existing smartphones might be able to do so just in time for Christmas.
