Big screen Huawei phone to challenge Samsung Galaxy Note II

When the original Samsung Galaxy Note launched in late 2011, some were confused about its purpose. With a 5.3 inch display, it was an inch larger than almost every top tier handset at the time and also featured the S-Pen stylus, which is the kind of accessory that most had thought extinct.
However, Samsung sold huge numbers of the Galaxy Note and so, clearly, it had struck on a valuable market segment that no one had thought to exploit.
This year's Galaxy Note II looks like it will be equally successful in the long term, with an even larger 5.5 inch Super AMOLED display onboard, coupled with a quad core processor and the same stylus as before.
However, Samsung could be facing some competition if rumours about the launch of an even larger and more powerful phone/tablet hybrid from Huawei turn out to be accurate.
Two months ago, it was reported that a handset called the Ascend Mate was being developed by this Chinese manufacturer. Its alleged specifications include a 6.1 inch display, with a full HD resolution, which trumps the 720p pixel count of the Galaxy Note 2.
In addition, the Ascend Mate will run a quad core chip clocked at 1.8GHz and coupled with 2GB of RAM. This would make it one of the world's fastest portable devices by a decent margin.
Of course, when phone displays push beyond the six inch barrier, you have to wonder whether or not their portability will be impacted. You can just about pop the Galaxy Note II into a pocket, provided it is of a generous proportion, but the Ascend Mate might take things too far.
None of the seven inch tablets, for example, is pocket-friendly. But if this market proves to be popular, then more companies are bound to start making similarly specified devices.
