Battery recycling drive in Lancashire
Monday, June 11, 2012 - 13:36:51
Those who live in Lancashire's Ribble Valley are being encouraged to recycle their used batteries rather than simply chucking them in the bin, as part of a wider scheme that is looking to tackle environmental issues caused by improper disposal of such cells.
A nationwide target has been set by the government, which should see at least 45 per cent of all batteries being recycled by 2016. At the moment just 2.8 per cent of old batteries are sent to be recycled, but authorities are keen to hit the first goal, of making sure 25 per cent are sent for recycling, before the end of this year.
The local council in the Ribble Valley area is rolling out battery recycling bins so that residents can dispose of everything, from simple AA cells to mobile phone batteries, in a way that will not be harmful to the eco system.
If by 2016 around 45 per cent of batteries used in the UK are being recycled, this will equate to about 200 million less being sent needlessly to landfill, where the materials they contain can be a long term threat to the local environment.
The environmental impact of batteries is a concern that goes hand in hand with the waste of metal, which occurs when they are simply binned. Local councillor, Robert Thompson, said that thousands of tonnes of recyclable metal can be reconstituted from batteries, but that this requires people to actually be made aware that the facilities to achieve this are available to them.
Some people in the UK may be able to recycle batteries when they have their waste collected by the council, so it is worth checking up to see how comprehensive your local facilities are and whether you will need to travel to recycle batteries or not.
