Apple pushes eco-friendly mobile plans

This week Apple has published a new report into the sustainability of its business practices and the degree to which it acts responsibly in terms of the environmental impact of the products it produces.
Coinciding with Earth Day 2017, the study shows that it has big plans to build iPhones, iPads and other devices using materials which are less likely to have a negative impact on the ecosystem.
In the long term, it is aiming to only make use of components which are created via recycling processes, meaning that old smartphones which are sold to be recycled will ultimately find their way back into the hands of consumers when the valuable minerals they contain are repurposed.
Furthermore, the US tech giant is also seeking to make greater use of renewable energy resources when designing and building its handsets, according to the Science Times.
Apple wields a lot of influence thanks to its size and the scope of its operations, so it has the power to actively encourage the companies it works with to follow a similar path towards sustainability. This counts not only for the manufacturing partners which supply it with parts for its smartphones, but also the energy firms that power its facilities.
Of course, Apple is not without its critics, having faced flack from organisations like Greenpeace in the past as a result of questions over the environmental and ethical soundness of the ways in which its devices are manufactured.
The recyclability of the iPhone range has been scrutinised, with some rival firms managing to do a better job of making their devices easy to dismantle and repair. But Apple is not responsible for the wider trend for regular mobile updates which could be seen as a bigger issue in terms of environmental impact.
