Apple lifts curtain on iPad 2

The iPad 2 has been unveiled by tech firm Apple, with a UK launch date of March 25th and a whole host of hardware and software improvements made to ensure that it is as desirable as ever.
The new tablet will come in at the same price point as its predecessor, with the Wi-Fi and 3G version costing more than its Wi-Fi only sibling.
Apple has ensured that it will be able to compete with the likes of the BlackBerry Playbook and Motorola Xoom, by including a dual core A5 processor in the iPad 2, thought to be running two physical cores at 1GHz each.
While adding this extra processing power, it has also managed to retain the maximum battery life of 10 hours for the iPad 2, which is good news in terms of portability.
The iPad 2 is 33 per cent slimmer than the original iPad and around 90 grams lighter, which adds up to a device which is even easier to hold. Integrating magnets into the device has allowed Apple to create a smart cover which flips across the front and protects the iPad 2 while still looking cool.
The iPad 2 will come with a number of new software functions, the most notable of which is GarageBand, usually found on Apple's laptop and desktop computers. With tuners, virtual amps and automatic instruments, it is a miniature recording studio which will surely please creative types.
Given that this week BlackBerry executives were arguing that tablets would soon come to relegate smartphones to devices for pure communication, the iPad 2 looks like it is well positioned to replace its precursor and stand a fighting chance in the modern market.
Its lack of an updated screen may be the one point of contention for potential buyers, as while it is nice to see integrated cameras and a slimmer build, the display will be dragging its feet against the tides of progress.
