Apple initiates iPhone recycling scheme

Apple is jumping on the mobile phone recycling bandwagon and offering its customers the opportunity to trade in an older iPhone as a way of reducing the cost of upgrading to the latest iPhone 5 handset.
At the moment this scheme is only planned to roll out in the US, although it might eventually make it to the UK and other countries, according to Bloomberg.
While this is obviously good news for those who have been eyeing up the iPhone 5 but feel it is a bit too costly for them to commit their cash at the moment, it is also arguably an indication that Apple wants to try and stimulate the sales of its flagship handset, so that it can keep up with its Android-based rivals.
This could mean that Apple is finally feeling the pressure from the Samsung Galaxy S4 and the HTC One, both of which are considerably better equipped than the iPhone 5 when it comes to their key components.
A discount worth up to 128 could be handed down to owners of older iPhone models if they decide to trade them in, according to industry rumours, although Apple has yet to make a comment to confirm this assertion.
Of course, it is possible to actually get quite a bit more cash than this if you sell your old iPhone online via a recycling firm, particularly in the UK where the market for used Apple devices is very buoyant.
One thing which might put people off the idea of upgrading to the iPhone 5 is that Apple is getting ready to launch its successor in the next few months. It is always best to invest in an iPhone shortly after it has launched, since this means you get to enjoy it while it is still considered cutting edge.
