Apple iOS 5 announced

Apple has used the WWDC taking place this week to give the world an in-depth look at its next mobile operating system, iOS 5.
iOS 5 will be making an appearance on the next generation iPhone and iPad, but the best news of the launch was that it will also be backwards compatible with several of Apple's older devices.
As well as third and fourth generation iPod Touch support, iOS 5 will be able to operate on the two year old iPhone 3GS and on the first iteration of the iPad, which arrived last year.
One big improvement that is coming with iOS 5 is over the air updating, which means there will not necessarily be the need to plug in your Apple smartphone to your computer every time you want to upgrade the software.
For users of the iPad tablet range, the keyboard is getting the option to be divided and allocated to either side of the display, depending on its orientation. This will essentially make it easier to type without having to reach into the middle and loosen your grip on the device, which is similar to what Microsoft has promised with Windows 8.
A pull-down menu will show all of your push notifications when you upgrade to iOS 5, which is something Apple has learnt from recent versions of Google's Android platform. Twitter integration is also being touted as a significant step, which shows just how important the microblogging site has become since the last version of iOS was launched.
The Safari web browser is getting a new reader capability which allows it to break down websites into simple text elements, which will be easier to digest on the small screens of Apple's smartphones and media players. Tabbed browsing is also being enabled, vastly expanding the user-friendliness of the web experience.
