Apple hits headlines with iPhone launch

Apple was able to keep the world's media locked onto its Californian headquarters this week when it launched two new iPhone models in one major event.
The iPhone 5C made its debut, although with lots of leaks accurately showcasing its looks and features, it was not exactly a shocking arrival.
The 5C is basically a re-skinned version of last year's iPhone 5, with colourful plastic chassis standing in for high end metal on the outside. It has the same four inch Retina Display and the same processor, but it does get a better FaceTime camera for those who like video calling.
It is positioned as a budget alternative to the iPhone 5S, which was also unveiled during the launch. However, with a 469 basic price tag, the iPhone 5C is hardly going to be rubbing shoulders with other mid-range models when you add up the figures.
The iPhone 5S stays true to its name by acting as an incremental upgrade on the iPhone 5, rather than an outright revolution. It has the same display, which at four inches, is starting to look positively pokey compared with its five inch rivals, while the eight megapixel camera sounds similar, but actually has a larger sensor to suck in more light.
The big news of the day was that the iPhone 5S will feature a fingerprint scanner integrated into the Home Button, which should reduce the need for people to remember pass codes and could help to boost security.
There is also a 64-bit A7 processor housed in each and every iPhone 5S, which will do its best to make the new iOS 7 operating system feel fresh and new.
There is a sense that Apple is still treading water with its new mobiles, rather than really innovating. That will not stop people selling their old mobile phones to invest in a new iPhone, but it could impact the number of consumers who choose to do so.
