Apple Plans Two iPhone Unveilings
Thursday, May 30, 2013 - 10:50:46
Recent reports seem to back up long standing rumours that Apple will be debuting two entirely new iPhone models this year, with sources quoted by DigiTimes claiming that the flagship iPhone 5S will be unveiled along with a smaller, cheaper handset called the iPhone Mini.
The iPhone Mini will apparently be equipped with a 3.5 inch display rather than with the larger four-inch screen which can currently be found on the iPhone 5. This cheaper phone will be designed to match up to the hardware found on the two-year-old iPhone 4S, which will presumably allow Apple to target it at the lower end of the market.
Meanwhile the iPhone 5S is thought to feature brand new display technology that will allow it to have twice as many pixels as its predecessor. This would allow it to match or even exceed the clarity of the full HD displays found on rival phones like the HTC One and Sony Xperia Z.
Ever since the original iPhone arrived in 2007, Apple has pumped out just one new iteration every 12 months, although that could all change in 2013.
Apple chief exec Tim Cook was recently asked why his company has not doubled up its annual iPhone offerings with a more affordable alternative and he cryptically responded by saying that they have not yet taken this route. This statement can be interpreted as implying that while Apple has stuck to a particular strategy in the past, it may well be willing to change tack in the future.
Production of the iPhone 5S and iPhone Mini is likely to begin next month, while the devices will be announced in September and released shortly afterwards, so there is not long to wait until the official story unfolds in the world press.
