Android update destined for Sony Ericsson Xperia X10

The Xperia X10 smartphone is getting yet another shot in the arm, as Sony Ericsson has announced it will be updating the Android operating system for this aging smartphone once more.
The X10 was originally lumbered with Android 1.6 when it first launched and it took a long time for Android 2.1 to make its way to the handset, with Sony Ericsson saying that this would be the final update it would receive.
However, people who invested in the X10 will be pleased to hear that Android 2.3 is destined to arrive for the smartphone at some point in the summer of 2011, according to Engadget.
Sony Ericsson has said via an official blog, that the Xperia X10 has only been able to receive the Android 2.3 update because of its creation of newer Xperia-range smartphones, such as the Arc and the Play.
Annoyingly, the people who own an X10 as part of a fixed term, network-tied contract may not be eligible for the update, as Sony Ericsson said it did not have details on when or which providers would be able to offer it.
But giving the Xperia X10 a new version of Android will be good news for people who bought it SIM free, because it will allow the phone to compete with the latest mobiles launched in 2011 when it comes to functionality.
Improvements to the user interface will be implemented when the update arrives and it is not difficult to assume that support for Flash in the native browser will also be a key selling point, although Sony Ericsson has said that hardware limitations will restrict certain features from the older X10.
Sony Ericsson made clear that the Android 2.3 update for the Xperia X10 is still very much in the development stages, but has spoken confidently about its eventual launch.
