Android app support rumoured for BlackBerry

Future smartphones and tablets from the BlackBerry range could be compatible with Android applications, according to a spokesperson for Research in Motion (RIM).
At the start of the year it was suggested that mobile phones made by RIM might expand their functionality to include Android compatibility, greatly enhancing the number of apps available for fans of BlackBerry handsets.
Now video footage shot at the Mobile World Congress event last month reveals that an anonymous representative of RIM said that the BlackBerry Playbook tablet will definitely be getting Android app access.
Android apps will run not on the native QNX operating system which will power the BlackBerry Playbook but via the Dalvik engine sitting on top of the standard software, according to the video posted on tech leaks website Crackberry.
Given that there is no way of verifying the identity of the mysterious spokesperson or judging whether their views are accurate this story is less than concrete evidence of inbound Android support on BlackBerry.
However, it would certainly be a beneficial move for the BlackBerry Playbook and RIM's smartphone line up to begin supporting Android since the BlackBerry App World store looks sparsely populated when compared to the hundreds of thousands of software goodies which are on offer from the Android Market.
Observers have already been impressed with the hardware and operating system of the BlackBerry Playbook, which seems to have a fair chance of competing with the Apple iPad 2, even if it may not have the same instant success as this inevitably popular device.
BlackBerry smartphones have been somewhat lacking in the app stakes when compared with Android as well, but until this rumour is officially confirmed by a verifiable source who is not just a disembodied voice on a YouTube video, a degree of scepticism is to be expected.
