Android 2.3 ported to Nokia N900

The ageing Nokia N900 has been the hacker's handset of choice ever since it was launched in 2009 but now it has been blessed with the very latest offering from search giant Google, namely Android 2.3.
The modding community did not take long to port over Android 2.3 so that it runs on the originally Maemo-based N900 and from the looks of a video posted on YouTube, Nokia's once flagship handset is able to deal with this cutting edge software without batting an eyelid. That means performance is smooth and the basic functions including messaging and calling seem to be in working order.
In the video shown by DailyMobile even the web connectivity is enabled, allowing for social networking apps like Twitter to operate alongside some web browsing. Multitouch sensitivity for pinch to zoom seems sadly absent, but this is clearly a complete and comprehensive adaptation of Android 2.3 for a smartphone that was never intended to run Google's software.
Various iterations of Android have made their unofficial way to the Nokia N900 in the past and although the handset never found mainstream success it seems to be an enduring favourite amongst the hardcore mobile users who love to tweak and tinker.
Nokia has been promising to bring Maemo-style smartphones like the N900 back to the market in the near future, albeit under the new MeeGo moniker which represents its partnership with Intel and the integration of the Moblin platform into the mix of code that will power its next generation handsets.
Of course recent rumours about the likelihood of a Nokia smartphone running Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 have cast some doubt over the future of MeeGo and the follow-up to the N900, while the current range of high end Nokia handsets all use Symbian 3. At least now there is a way to get Android 2.3 if you do not want to buy a Google Nexus S.
