Analysts expect Windows Phone to outpace iOS in four years

By 2015 it is thought that Microsoft's Windows Phone platform will be more widely used than Apple's iOS software which is found on all iPhone models.
This is according to independent analysis conducted by IDC and it is based in part on the recent deal struck between Microsoft and Nokia, which will see the world's largest mobile manufacturer pushing Windows Phone 7 as its flagship platform.
IDC believes that only Android will be more popular than Windows Phone by the year 2015, leaving everyone from Apple to RIM further down the market share charts.
IDC's Ramon Llamas, said that Windows Phone 7 has proved to be a real turning point for Microsoft which was previously losing out in the smartphone market, but managed to turn things around, thanks to the appealing user experience and competitive handsets it has been rolling out since last autumn.
The market for mobiles is set to grow by almost 50 per cent in 2011, according to TechRadar. However, this will still be less than it did in 2010, which analysts see as being one of the biggest years for growth in the history of the industry.
2010's market growth for mobile phones was partly due to the economic pressures of 2009, causing some users to hold off on making a purchase until things improved, which may have artificially increased the figures above expected demand.
Of course the overall growth of the mobile market is only half of the story, because most firms, Microsoft included, will be more interested in how smartphone sales are eating into the share of traditional, non-smart mobiles. This is the area in which future battles will be fought and clearly the latest predictions suggest Microsoft is in a good position to become dominant.
