Americans criticised over lack of mobile recycling enthusiasm

Here in the UK people are becoming increasingly aware of the benefits associated with mobile phone recycling.
However, across the pond in the US, it seems that consumers are not as willing to accept the positive messages being spread about this process.
A new study from Lookout Mobile has found that 62 per cent of households in the US choose to hang onto old mobile phones once they are no longer being used, rather than selling them on to be recycled or reused.
That means that almost two thirds of Americans do not do the right thing and responsibly dispose of ageing, ultimately unwanted devices.
Eleven per cent of households reportedly have four or more old phones just lying around, gathering dust in a drawer or storage space. Forty two per cent have one to two old phones, while nine per cent have three.
The study also took responses from consumers to explain why they had not recycled their old mobile phones, with a third stating that they simply do not know what to do with their used handsets.
This implies that there is a greater need for education on the subject so that people can learn about the recycling facilities that are available to them and then take advantage of these services.
If you live in the UK, then you can sell your old mobile phone online, to unlock some of its residual value and still do your bit for the environment.
Used phones can be refurbished and reused, or broken down for their valuable components and materials, so that more devices can be produced in the future.
With millions of mobiles purchased over the Christmas period, there will probably be plenty of old handsets ready to be recycled, so it is worth being responsible and recycling them.
