Amazon smartphone rumours circulate

Amazon is no stranger to releasing own-brand hardware, since the Kindle eReader and Kindle Fire tablet families have both become prominent players in their respective markets over the last few years.
However, we have yet to see a smartphone device bearing the Amazon logo. With the current rumours doing the rounds, that could all be set to change soon.
It is thought that an Amazon smartphone will be launching this year, since Chinese manufacturer, Foxconn, is allegedly gearing up to manufacture the device at its factories and it might end up being one of the most affordable handsets on the market.
Although virtually nothing is known for certain about the Amazon smartphone, there are some fairly solid rumours that keep rearing their heads, according to TechRadar.
Firstly it is assumed that the Amazon smartphone will be based on the Android operating system, although precisely which version this will be and how heavily it has been modified remain to be seen.
It is also thought that the Amazon smartphone will take the same approach as the Kindle Fire tablet range and be priced as cheaply as possible, thus giving it the best chance of selling in high volumes.
It could be put on sale for as little as 100, which would allow it to compete with the very cheapest smartphones on the market at the moment.
The technical specs of the Amazon smartphone are still a mystery, although sources have been quoted as saying that it will have a high-def touchscreen display, measuring between four and five inches in size, which seems about right.
Hopefully, it will also come with advanced connectivity, including 4G and NFC, although bargain hunters might not be too perturbed if these are missing in action.
Expect to hear a lot more about the Amazon smartphone in the coming months. Could the reign of the iPhone and Galaxy S ranges be over?
