Alcatel showcases trio of high end smartphones at CES

CES 2013 has not thrown up too many surprises, in part because many of the manufacturers involved actually chose to reveal their major products prior to the start of the show.
But for those in the know, the emergence of three brand new Alcatel smartphones, each of which attempts to take on some of the industry's biggest hitters, was a bit of a shock.
Alcatel is a manufacturer that plies its trade at the bottom end of the market, with affordable devices for those on a budget. So the new entries in the One Touch range, which were unveiled at CES, are ambitious to say the least.
The Alcatel One Touch Idol is the most basic of the bunch, but it still packs a 1GHz dual core processor, a 4.7 inch display and an eight megapixel camera.
It also tips the scales at just 110 grams, which makes it the lightest smartphone in its class, according to the manufacturer.
A step up from it is the One Touch Idol Ultra, which is just 6.45mm thick and uses a 1.2GHz dual core processor, along with a 720p HD 4.7 inch AMOLED screen.
This puts it in the same league as the Samsung Galaxy S3 and HTC One X, albeit without the quad core power offered by these devices.
The most powerful of Alcatel's new devices is the One Touch Scribe HD, which has the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 squarely in its sights.
It has a five inch high-def display, a quad core processor and 4G networking capabilities as well. The press shots suggest that it will come bundled with a stylus, to echo the S-Pen found onboard the Galaxy Note 2.
Since these Alcatel smartphones are a little less powerful than their better known equivalents, you can expect them to feature much more appealing asking prices.
