Acer debuts unnamed high end handset

Computer manufacturer Acer is set to add to its smartphone line up with a gargantuan new handset which features eye-wateringly high specs, although it has failed to mention what name the mobile will take.
The nameless Acer handset will feature a 4.8 inch touchscreen display that will dwarf the 4.3 inch screen of the HTC Desire HD and bring it close to the five inches of onscreen real estate possessed by the Dell Streak.
The native resolution for such a large display is suitably high, with Acer stating that it will support 1024x480. This is higher even than the iPhone 4 but the pixels are stretched across a much larger screen so it is unlikely to match the Apple handset for crispness.
Because of its large size, the next-gen Acer handset will weigh 170 grams and be rather bulky, but from the early press shots it looks as though this will be a handsome phone which might make up for its size.
The Acer handset will have an eight megapixel camera on the rear which will presumably be able to shoot video in HD, a point that is attested to by the presence of an HDMI output. You can share wirelessly via its DLNA compatibility and there is even a forward-facing camera which will enable video chats.
This is an Android-based smartphone so it will have access to the Android Market for app downloads and Acer might be aiming at the gamers out there, because it includes the same advanced motion-sensitive gyroscope technology as found in the iPhone 4. Android's deficit of decent games might put paid to this part of the package.
On paper and in the mock-ups, this Acer smartphone definitely makes a forthright appearance at the top end of the market, but until it is named and more specs are revealed it will be difficult to quantify.
