3D graphics planned for next-gen mobiles with British backing

Superior 3D graphics which come close to photo realism are being developed for mobile phones by British firm Imagination Technologies.
The news that next-gen handsets will be able to present a graphically rich world to users has come after Imagination acquired Caustic Graphics for £17 million, according to Tech Radar.
Imagination is the parent firm of digital radio manufacturer Pure Radio and it is also responsible for the graphic processors which power the iPhone, among other mobile devices.
Reports claim that Caustic is able to recreate cinematic 3D experiences on portable platforms, which is good news for mobile lovers who are underwhelmed by the current generation of visual tricks featuring on high end handsets.
Imagination's David Harold said that rendering photorealistic graphics in real time would be possible in the near future. With £107 million worth of graphics chips sold by the firm and a doubling of its profits, it is definitely looking at a bright future.
Big name firms including Intel, Samsung and Fujitsu all have licensing deals with Imagination which have been extended and over 100 million portable devices are now in circulation with its tech housed onboard.
Mobile graphics have come to the fore in recent years, with the iPhone showing that 3D environments and powerful hardware can create detailed graphics that surpass what is available on dedicated handheld games consoles like the Sony PSP or Nintendo DSi.
Interestingly, the mainstream market for mobile gaming does not seem to have caught on to the improvement in graphics, as 2D games like Angry Birds and Cut the Rope dominate the charts. This suggests that there is still room for developers and hardware manufacturers to push the boundaries and garner mainstream attention, rather than relying on hardcore gamers to make ends meet.
